The
disadvantage of using two hands for text entry
Why base the whole typing method on the assumption that only one hand
is available? The fact is that in 99,9 % of cases when you type, both
hands are available. Should you most of the time keep your left hand in
the pocket and suffer from a slower and more difficult single-hand text
entry mehod (what ever that might be) because there is a chance that
you might need the other hand for something at that very moment?
Even if you have a GKOS keyboard on your phone, it is still
possible to browse menues and initiate/answer phone calls and do other
operations by one hand. You may even have an additional legacy keyboard
on the back of you device for traditional SMSing.
Possible
reasons for a single hand design:
1)
You need the other hand for the
mouse
Not valid for GKOS because you use
thumbs for pointer control.
2)
You are driving a car and it is
not possible to take both hands off the steering wheel
Not really valid because using your
mobile
phone for voice calls while driving is restricted or completetly
forbidden in most coutries and sending SMS (by one hand) is even
more dangerous. But with a phone using GKOS text entry you can can make
phone calls with one hand only if you wish. - In addition, by attaching
GKOS keys on the back of the
steering wheel, you can type (if allowed) while keeping both of your
hands on the wheel and an eye on the traffic. - As said, voice calls
can be
managed by one hand anyway.
3)
You need your keys to open the
door
Have a break of 5 seconds in typing!
4)
You are carrying something on the
other hand
Put the bag down for a minute but do
not leave it unattended.
5)
You are running down the stairs
and need to support yourself by the other hand
Resume typing when you get downstairs
or use an elevator. You are not that busy. And if you are still
carrying the bag...
6)
For people with
disabilities, it may never be possible to use both hands for text entry
This certainly is a valid reason to use
a different kind of typing mehod.
